The Black Panther Party’s Breakfast for Children Program

Like the advances in Emergency Medical Services pioneered by the Freedom House Ambulance Service the Black Panther Party’s Breakfast for Children program was the seed for the modern WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program. In 1969 the Black Panther Party, recognizing that children learn better when they aren’t hungry started providing free breakfast for children in West Oakland, California. The breakfasts spread throughout the nation forming the core of the party’s Survival Programs.
