Oliver Law (1900-1937)

Oliver Law was the first African American to lead an integrated unit of US soldiers. He served in the Abraham Lincoln Battalion - US citizens who “prematurely” recoginized the danger of fascism in the 1930s and volunteered to fight with the Spanish people in defense of the Spanish Republic against the Nationalists led by Francisco Franco. In Spain, Law, a veteran of the US Army, quickly rose in rank first to the leader of a machine gun company, and then as a the acting batallion commander. He was killed in combat on the 9th of July, 1937.
